Hiking adventures are a huge part of the outdoor experience. Whether you are through hiking the Appalachian Trail, or day hiking your nearest state or national park, hiking provides a unique way to experience nature. Here at Kemp Outside, we pride ourselves on helping moms and dads take their kids camping, fishing, hiking, learn about nature and develop a conservation ethic. Perhaps of the three (camping, fishing and hiking), hiking is the easiest way to get your feet wet (pun intended!)
While it is true you should be in fantastic shape to tackle the Appalachian or Pacific Coast Trails, and you should be in reasonably good shape to tackle trails with lots of elevation changes, you don’t have to be in tiptop shape to hike all trails. And while having high tech boots and trekking poles can be beneficial, they aren’t always needed.
Almost every park you visit will have trails of various difficulties. If you are just starting out in your tennis shoes with a water bottle and granola bar in your school backpack, I say good for you!!! Hit an easy trail and go from there.
Here’s a pro parenting tip from a dad of two boys. Nothing will wear out a couple of kids like letting them run all over while hiking. Now, please be mindful of sensitive areas and habitats, bu my youngest son always runs ahead, falls behind and runs ahead again. If I could bottle that energy and sell it I would, but letting him burn it off is good for him and the rest of us!
Hiking is perfect for kids of all ages. It gets them to put down their electronic device, breathe clean air and get some exercise. If you pick a trail with interpretive signs, they have the opportunity to learn something as well.
